Oil-directed rigs accounted for most of the sharp increase in the drilling rig count in Canada during the week ended Jan. 10, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
Canada now has 216 rigs working, up 122 from the previous week, and up 3 from the year-ago period. Of those 216 units, 144 were drilling for oil, up 100 from last week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada stands at 72 for the week, up 22 from a week ago.
The US rig count dropped 5 units to reach 584 rigs working for the week. Land rigs accounted entirely for the drop as a 5-unit decline for the week left 568 rigs working on land this week.
Rigs drilling offshore and in inland waters each were unchanged from a week ago, remaining at respective totals of 14 and 2.
Oil rigs fell by 2 units to 480 while gas rigs fell by 3 to 100. Rigs considered unclassified remained at 4 total, unchanged from last week.
There were 5 fewer horizontal drilling rigs working, ending the week at 522.
Texas’s rig count decreased by 3 units to reach a total of 282. Utah and Colorado each dropped a single unit to reach respective counts of 11 and 9 rigs working.
