HOUSTON, Mar. 13 -- Meridian Resource Corp., Houston, plans to begin nitrogen injection at giant Weeks Island oil and gas field near New Iberia, La., in mid-2007.

The company owns 92-96% working interest and is operator, having acquired the field from Shell Oil Co. in August 1998.

The process is intended to recover attic oil reserves adjacent to the salt dome that are updip to perforations in the existing well bores.

This oil would otherwise require additional wells to tap, and nitrogen injection, if successful, will improve recovery at much less cost and risk than drilling new wells adjacent to the salt dome, the company said.
