The overall US rig count is down 12 rigs during the week ended Aug. 18. Baker Hughes’ calculation of active US rigs ended the week at 642 units.
Rigs drilling for oil fell 5 units to 520 rigs working, while those rigs targeting natural gas dropped by 6 units to 117 rigs. Rigs unclassified were down 1 unit to 5.
The US rig count is down 120 rigs from last year’s count of 762, with oil rigs down 81, gas rigs down 42, and unclassified rigs up 3.
The US offshore rig count decreased 1 rig from last week to 17. The count is down by 1 rig year-over-year. On land, meanwhile, the count landed at 621 units after losing 11 rigs for the week.
Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Louisiana and West Virginia were down 3 rigs each to respective counts of 45 and 9. Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Ohio were down 2 rigs each to respective counts of 38, 33, and 10.
New Mexico and Wyoming each dopped a single rig to leave 112 and 20 rigs working, respectively.
Pennsylvania gained 2 rigs to end the week with 21 rigs working.
In Canada, the overall rig count fell by 1 unit this week to reach 189. Rigs drilling for oil increased by 3 units to 119 and those targeting gas fell by 4 units to 70. The total count is down 12 units from this time a year ago when 201 rigs were operating.
