Oil rigs drive increase in Canada rig count

The drilling rig count in Canada increased during the week ended July 28, led by a gain in oil-directed rigs.

Baker Hughes’ overall tally of active drilling rigs in Canada increased 6 units to 193, down 11 units from the year-ago level.

Oil-directed rigs increased by 5 this week to 121, down 16 from the year-ago level of 137.

Gas-directed rigs increased by 1 unit to 72. There are 5 more active gas-directed rigs than this time last year.

The total US drilling rig count decreased by 5 this week to 664 rigs working. There are 103 fewer rigs drilling in the US and its waters compared with this time last year. There were 529 oil-directed rigs in the US this week, 76 fewer than the same period in 2022. With a 3-rig drop, 128 rigs were gas-directed.

Seven fewer rigs were working onshore, with rigs drilling horizontally down 8 to 592, and down 105 from this period in 2022. 

The US offshore count was up a single unit this week to 19.

Louisiana gained 2 rigs to end the week with 51 rigs working, 14 fewer than this time last year.

New Mexico dropped 2 rigs to leave 111 working for the week. Four states saw single rig drops this week, namely Oklahoma, 39; Pennsylvania, 22; Colorado 14; and Ohio, 12.
