Canadian drilling activity continues its climb, having increased every week so far this month. After adding 23 rigs last week, another 10 were added this week for a total of 169 working, officials at Baker Hughes Inc. reported. The count is 15 more than this time last year.
In Canada, 3 more rigs were drilling for gas in the week ended June 23 for a total of 59. With 110 oil-directed rigs running, the count is 7 more than last week, and 6 more than this time last year.
US drilling activity decreased again this week. Following last week’s 8-unit drop, the rig count in the US is down 5 this week for a total of 682 rigs working. That is 71 fewer than the 753 total units drilling during the same period a year ago.
Four fewer rigs were drilling on US land, with 661 currently active. Offshore drilling rigs decreased by a single unit to 19. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 2.
There were 6 fewer rigs drilling for oil in the US and its waters. With 546 rigs running for the week, the oil-directed rig count is 48 fewer than this time last year. The number of US rigs drilling for natural gas was unchanged at 130.
The rig count in Louisiana dropped by 3 to reach 47 rigs drilling for the week. Texas decreased drilling this week by 2 rigs to reach 345 rigs working. North Dakota, West Virginia, and Alaska each dropped a single rig to reach respective counts of 35, 12, and 8.
Rig increases were seen in New Mexico and Pennsylvania. With a 2-unit increase, New Mexico’s rig count hit 106 for the week, while Pennsylvania added a single rig to reach 23 rigs running.
