Baker Hughes: US, Canada weekly rig counts down

The US drilling rig count is down 3 units to 748 rigs working for the week ended Apr. 14, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 55 units from the 693 rigs working this time a year ago.

At 727 rigs working, the land rig count is down 6 from last week. Offshore units are up 3 to reach 20 rigs working, while those drilling in inland waters are unchanged, leaving 1 rig working for the week.

US oil-directed rigs are down 2 units from last week to 588 units working, and up from the 548 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs are down by 1 to 157 units, and up 14 from the 143 units drilling for gas a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, three saw an increase in rigs week over week. New Mexico, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania each gained a rig this week to reach respective counts of 104, 57, and 25.

The largest decrease comes from Oklahoma where a 3-unit drop brought the total number of rigs running to 55. Texas saw 2 fewer rigs working this week with a total of 375 to end the week, while Ohio dropped a single rig to reach 10 rigs working.

Canada’s rig count is down 16 units for the week. With 111 rigs running, the count is 8 more than the 103 units drilling this week a year ago. Rigs drilling for oil in Canada were down 7 this week to 45. Gas rigs fell by 9 to reach 66 working for the week.
