The rig count in Canada gained 2 units the week ended Mar. 3 to reach a total of 246 rigs working, according to data from Baker Hughes.

Two of the units gained target gas, bringing the gas-directed count to 88. The count is up 6 units from this week a year ago. Oil-directed rigs in Canada were unchanged at 158.

The overall US drilling rig count fell by 4 units this week to reach a total of 749 rigs working.

Three additional rigs were targeting gas for a total of 154. The count is up 24 from this time a year ago. The oil-directed rig count dropped by 8 units to 592 but remained up from the 519 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago.

Land rigs decreased 2 units to 732. Horizontal drilling rigs were down 3 units to 690. Directional drilling rigs edged up a unit to 45.

Offshore rigs and those drilling in inland water were both down a single rig at 16 and 1 rigs working, respectively.

Leading the major oil-and gas-producing states was Wyoming with a 2-unit gain to 20 rigs running. Texas dropped the most rigs this week. With 366 rigs running, the count is down 4 units from last week. Louisiana dropped 2 rigs to reach 62, and Oklahoma dropped a single rig to end the week with 61 rigs working.
