The weekly rig count increased in Canada and was steady for the US and its waters, according to Baker Hughes.
In Canada, the rig count increased by 6 to 247 from last week's total of 241. A year ago, Canada's count was 217.
There were 771 rotary rigs working in the US and its waters compared to 610 for the comparable period a year ago.
Of the rigs working in the US and its waters this week, 609 were drilling for oil, 4 fewer than last week; 160 were drilling for gas, up 4 from last week; and 2 were unclassified. There were 756 rigs on land; 2 in inland waters, and 13 offshore.
The count in New Mexico rose 3 from last week to 105; North Dakota rose 2 to 41; and Pennsylvania rose by 1 for a total of 22.
Louisiana is down 3 rigs for the week to 61, while West Virginia lost a single rig to reach 16 drilling for the week.
