State Gas Ltd., Brisbane, has mobilized two rigs to its Rougemont coal seam gas prospect in its 100%-owned permit ATP 2062 in Bowen basin, southeast Queensland.

One rig will drill new horizontal well, Rougemont-3. The other is a workover rig that will prepare the current completion in Rougemont-2 with a ranging tool for Rougemont-3 operation.

Rougemont-3 will lie 1.4 km from Rougemont-2, the plan being to drill two horizontal laterals to intersect with Rougemont-2 vertical well. The laterals will kick off at 290 m and 320 m vertical depth, respectively, from Rougemont-3 to cut through two primary coal seams in the Bandanna coal sequence that were identified in Rougemont-2 drilled in mid-2021.

The target total in-seam coal length will be about 2 km, State Gas said.

Rougemont-2 intersected 9 m of net coal, the two main seams were 2.8 m and 2.4 m thick. Testing indicated good permeability while methane content of the gas flow was 94%, close to pipeline quality. Gas content was measured at 5.4 cu m/tonne.

Once the laterals have been completed, the workover rig will return and replace the pump in Rougemont-2. This will be followed by production testing of the two wells as an integrated pair.

ATP 2062 was awarded to State Gas in late 2020. The region is close to existing pipeline infrastructure.
