The overall US drilling rig count declined during the week ended Sept. 2, led by a decline in oil-directed rigs.
Baker Hughes’ count of active US drilling rigs decreased 5 units to 760. The count is 263 more than the number of active rigs this time last year.
Oil-directed rigs declined 9 units to 596 rigs working for the week, up 202 from the same time last year. Gas directed rigs increased by 4 to reach 162.
Three fewer rigs are drilling on land, bringing this week’s count to 741. The count is up 246 from this time a year ago. Rigs drilling horizontally increased by 1 to 695. The US offshore count fell by 2 units this week to total 16.
Texas dropped 9 units this week to 362. There were 6 fewer rigs drilling in the Permian basin than last week. The rig count in the Eagle Ford increased by a single unit to reach 71 rigs working for the week.
New Mexico and North Dakota each gained 2 rigs to reach counts of 108 and 39, respectively.
Canada’s rig count increased by 7 this week to 208. All 7 rigs target oil, bringing the count to 143.
