The overall US drilling rig count gained 3 units the week ended Aug. 26 to reach a total of 765 rigs working, according to data from Baker Hughes.
Four of the units gained target oil, bringing the oil-directed count to 605. The count is up 195 units from this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs dropped by 1 unit to 158.
Land rigs increased 3 units to 744. Horizontal drilling rigs were unchanged at 694. Directional drilling rigs edged up a unit to 40.
Offshore rigs and those drilling in inland water were both unchanged at 18 and 3 rigs working, respectively.
In Canada, the overall rig count was unchanged at 201, up 54 from the 147 rigs running this time last year. At 136 rigs working, one fewer rig was drilling for oil in Canada, offsetting the single-unit gain in rigs drilling for gas, which ended the week with a 65-unit count.
Leading the major oil-and gas-producing states was Texas with a 2-unit gain to 371 rigs running. Louisiana gained 1 rig to reach 65 units working for the week.
