Baker Hughes: US, Canada weekly rig counts down

The US drilling rig count is down 3 units to 764 rigs working for the week ended Aug. 5, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 273 units from the 491 rigs working this time a year ago.

The US drilling rig count is down 3 units to 764 rigs working for the week ended Aug. 5, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 273 units from the 491 rigs working this time a year ago.

At 746 rigs working, the land rig count is unchanged from last week. Offshore units are down by 1 to reach 16 rigs working, while those drilling in inland waters are down 2 rigs, leaving 2 rigs working for the week.

US oil-directed rigs are down 7 units from last week to 598 units working, and up from the 387 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs are up 4 units at 161, and up from the 103 units drilling for gas a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, four saw an increase in rigs week over week. Texas and Colorado gained 2 rigs each to hit 373 and 21 rigs working for the week, respectively. North Dakota and Wyoming gained a single rig each for respective counts of 37 and 20.

The largest decrease comes from New Mexico where a 6-unit drop brought the total number of rigs running to 104. Louisiana dropped 3 units to reach 62 rigs.

Canada’s rig count is down 1 unit for the week. With 203 rigs running, the count is more than the 156 units drilling this week a year ago. Rigs drilling for oil in Canada are up 3 this week to 140. Gas rigs fell by 4 to reach 63 working for the week.
