The active rig count in the US was up 4 units to 693 for the week shortened by the Good Friday holiday, Baker Hughes data indicated.
US oil-directed increased by 2 units to 548 for the week ended Apr. 14, up 204 year-over-year. Gas-directed rigs increased by 2 to 143, up by 49 compared to the same week a year ago. Two rigs considered unclassified remained active during the week.
US land-based rigs rose 5 units during the week to 680, with horizontal rigs also recording a 5-rig gain to 636. Directional drilling rigs remained unchanged at 32, while the vertical rig count fell by one to 25 rigs working. No rigs were gained or lost offshore, where 12 rigs remain working in the Gulf of Mexico, the same number as were drilling this time a year ago.
Texas led the major oil- and gas-producing states with a 4-unit increase to 346, up 132 from year-ago levels. The rig count in the Eagle Ford increased by 3 this week to hit 60 rigs running.
West Virginia gained 2 rigs to hit 14 rigs working for the week. Oklahoma and Alaska each gained a single rig to reach 51 and 8 rigs running, respectively.
Pennsylvania dropped 2 rigs to end the week at 23, up 5 from the 18 rigs running in the state this time last year. Louisiana and New Mexico were each down a single rig to counts of 95 and 56, respectively.
Louisiana and Alaska each fell 2 units to respective counts of 58 and 5.
Canada continued its seasonal decline with an 8-unit loss to 103, but up 47 from this time a year-ago. Gas-directed rigs dropped 4 units to 54, and oil-directed rigs declined 4 units to 49.
