The weekly rotary rig count fell by 36 units in Canada, but rose 7 in the US and its waters, said Baker Hughes, Houston.
This week there were 140 rotary rigs working in Canada and 670 rigs working in the US and its waters. A year ago, the numbers were 81 and 417 respectively.
Of the rigs working in the US and its waters this week, 531 were drilling for oil; 137 were drilling for gas, and 2 were unclassified. There were 653 rigs on land, 3 in inland waters, and 14 offshore.
Texas’s count increased by 6 to 326, the biggest change this week. Louisiana gained 2 units to reach 60, while North Dakota and Pennsylvania each gained a rig to hit 33 and 25 rigs working, respectively. New Mexico, Ohio, and Alaska each dropped a rig to end the week at 96, 11, and 7 rigs working.
