Baker Hughes: US rig count up 6 units to 610

The US drilling rig count is up 6 units, reaching 610 rigs working for the week ended Jan. 28, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 226 units from the 384 rigs working this time a year ago.

The US drilling rig count is up 6 units, reaching 610 rigs working for the week ended Jan. 28, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 226 units from the 384 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land increased 6 units week-over-week to a total of 590 units. Rigs drilling in inland waters were unchanged at 2. Rigs drilling offshore were unchanged at 18.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 4 from last week to reach 495 units. This time a year ago, 295 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas increased by 2 units to 115, 27 more than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas gained the largest number of rigs. At 284 rigs running, the count is 4 more than the previous week.

Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania each gained a single rig to reach 57, 51, and 23 rigs running, respectively.

One state, New Mexico, saw a rig count decrease. With one fewer rig, the state’s count stands at 94 for the week.

Eight states were unchanged this week, namely North Dakota, 27; Wyoming, 15; Colorado, 12; Ohio, 11; West Virginia, 11; Utah, 10; California, 8; and Alaska, 6.

Canada’s rig count increased by 5 units for the week. At 217 rigs, the count is 43 more than the 174 units drilling this week a year ago. With 135 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rigs count increased by a single rig. Gas-directed rigs in Canada increased by 4 units to reach 82.
