Baker Hughes: US rig count up 5 to 508

The US drilling rig count increased by 5 units to reach 508 rigs working for the week ended Aug. 27, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 254 units from the 254 rigs working this time a year ago.

The US drilling rig count increased by 5 units to reach 508 rigs working for the week ended Aug. 27, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 254 units from the 254 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land was up 5 units week-over-week with a total of 490. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged at 15. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 3.

US oil-directed rigs were up 5 from last week at 410 units. This time a year ago, 180 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas were unchanged at 97, 25 more than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Wyoming saw the largest increase. A 2-rig increase brought the rig count to 18 for the week.

Three states saw a 1-rig increase, namely Texas, 232; New Mexico, 81; and Oklahoma, 31.

Nine states remained unchanged this week, namely Louisiana, 49; North Dakota, 22; Pennsylvania 19; Ohio, 12; Colorado 11; Utah, 11; West Virginia, 9 California, 6; and Alaska, 4.

Canada’s rig count decreased by 9 units to 147 rigs drilling for the week. The count is 93 more than the 54 units drilling this week a year ago. At 85 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count dropped 10 rigs from last week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada increased by 2 rigs to 62 rigs running for the week.
