Baker Hughes: US rig count up 3 units to 491

The US drilling rig count increased by 3 units to reach 491 rigs working for the week ended Aug. 6, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 244 units from the 247 rigs working this time a year ago.

The US drilling rig count increased by 3 units to reach 491 rigs working for the week ended Aug. 6, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 244 units from the 247 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land was up 3 units week-over-week with a total of 476. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged at 14. A single rig was drilling in inland waters, unchanged from last week.

US oil-directed rigs were up 2 from last week at 387 units. This time a year ago, 176 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas were unchanged at 103, 34 more than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Wyoming saw the largest increase. A 3-rig increase brought the rig count to 16 for the week.

New Mexico and Oklahoma each added a single rig to reach 75 and 31 rigs, respectively.

Texas and California each dropped a single rig to end the week with 229 and 5 rigs working, respectively.

Eight states remained unchanged this week, namely Louisiana, 48; North Dakota, 19; Pennsylvania 19; Colorado 11; Ohio 11; Utah 10; West Virginia 10; and Alaska, 5.

Canada’s rig count increased by 3 units to 156 rigs drilling for the week. The count is 109 more than the 47 units drilling this week a year ago. At 95 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count gained 2 rigs from last week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada increased by a single rig to 60 rigs running for the week.
