The US drilling rig count increased by 2 units to reach 457 rigs working for the week ended May 28, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 156 units from the 301 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land was up 2 units week-over-week with a total of 442. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged at 14.

US oil-directed rigs were up 3 units from last week at 350. This time a year ago, 222 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas decreased 1 unit to 98, 21 more than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest increase. A 4-rig gain brought the rig count to 218 for the week.

Oklahoma gained 2 rigs to reach 28 running for the week.

Pennsylvania dropped 2 rigs and stands and stands at 17 rigs running. New Mexico and Colorado dropped a single rig each to hit 71 and 9 rigs for the week.

Eight states remained unchanged this week, namely Louisiana, 53; North Dakota, 16; West Virginia, 11; Ohio, 10; Utah, 9; California, 6; Wyoming, 4; and Alaska, 4.

Canada’s rig count increased by 4 units to 62 rigs drilling for the week. The count is 42 more than the 20 units drilling this week a year ago. At 28 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count increased by 3 units for the week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada is up 1 unit to 34.
