Shell Malaysia let a contract to Maersk Drilling for the Maersk Viking drillship to drill four development wells at the Gumusut-Kakap project offshore Malaysia.

Shell is producing oil at its first deepwater platform in Malaysia, from Gumusut-Kakap field, which lies in waters up to 1,200 m. The field currently has 19 subsea wells with oil exported via a 200-km long pipeline to an oil and gas terminal in Sabah, according to Shell’s website.

The contract is expected to commence in December 2021, with an estimated duration of 150 days. The firm contract value is about $34 million, including a mobilization fee. The contract includes five additional one-well options for work offshore Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam.

Maersk Viking is currently operating offshore Brunei Darussalam for Brunei Shell Petroleum.
