The US drilling rig count increased 6 units to reach 384 rigs working for the week ended Jan. 29, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 406 units from the 790 rigs working this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling on land was up 6 units week-over-week with a total of 365. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters remained unchanged at 3. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged at 16.
US oil-directed rigs increased by 6 from last week to reach 295 units. This time a year ago, 675 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas remained unchanged at 88 rigs, 24 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.
Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest increase. A 7-rig increase brought the rig count to 182 for the week. Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Wyoming all saw a single rig increase to reach 18, 12, and 5 rigs running for the week.
New Mexico’s rig count decreased by 3 to reach 62 rigs drilling for the week. Alaska dropped a single rig to leave 4 rigs running.
Seven states remained unchanged this week, Louisiana, 47; Pennsylvania, 18; West Virginia, 12; Colorado, 8; California, 7; Ohio, 5; and Utah, 3.
Canada’s rig count increased 2 units to 174 rigs drilling for the week. The count is 73 fewer than the 247 units drilling this week a year ago. At 98 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count is up 2 units for the week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada remained unchanged at 76.
