Baker Hughes: Canada’s rig count up 11 units to 172

Canada has added 11 rigs for the week ended Jan. 22, according to Baker Hughes data. At 172 rigs, the count is 72 fewer than the 244 units drilling this week a year ago. With 96 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rig count was up 6 for the week.

With 96 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rig count was up 6 for the week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada increased by 5 units to reach 716

The overall US rig count increased 5 units to reach 378 rigs working for the week. The count is down 416 units from the 794 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land is up 5 units week-over-week with a total of 359. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters is unchanged at 3. The offshore rig count is unchanged at 16.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 2 from last week to reach 289 units. This time a year ago, 676 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas are up 3 units to 88, 27 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas again saw the largest increase. With 175 rigs running, the count is 6 more than the week prior. Alaska gained 2 rigs to reach 5 drilling for the week. West Virginia, North Dakota, and Ohio each gained 1 rig to reach 12, 11, 5, respectively. At 65 rigs running, New Mexico’s rig count decreased by 5 units. Pennsylvania is down 1 rig from last week with 18.

Six states remained unchanged this week, namely Louisiana, 47; Oklahoma, 17; Colorado, 8; California, 7; Wyoming 4; and Utah, 3.
