Baker Hughes: Canada’s rig count up 44 units to 161

Canada has added 44 rigs for the week ended Jan. 15, according to Baker Hughes data. At 161 rigs, the count is 83 fewer than the 244 units drilling this week a year ago. With 90 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rig count was up 37 for the week.

With 90 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rig count was up 37 for the week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada increased by 7 units to reach 71.

The overall US rig count increased 13 units to reach 373 rigs working for the week. The count is down 423 units from the 796 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land is up 13 units week-over-week with a total of 354. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters is up 1 rig to 3. The offshore rig count is down 1 to 16.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 12 from last week to reach 287 units. This time a year ago, 673 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas are up 1 unit to 85, 35 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest increase. With 169 rigs running, the count is 8 more than the week prior. Louisiana gained 4 rigs to reach 47 drilling for the week. West Virginia and Colorado each gained 2 rigs to reach 11 and 8, respectively. At 70 rigs running, New Mexico’s rig count increased by 1 unit.

Five states remained unchanged this week, namely California, 7; Ohio, 4; Wyoming 4; Alaska, 3; and Utah, 3.

Pennsylvania dropped 2 rigs for the week to reach 19. Oklahoma and North Dakota each dropped 1 rig to reach 17 and 10 rigs running, respectively.
