Canada has added 58 rigs for the week ended Jan. 8,  according to Baker Hughes data. At 117 rigs, the count is 86 fewer than the 203  units drilling this week a year ago. With 53 rigs drilling, Canada’s  oil-directed rig count was up 35 for the week. The gas-directed rig count in  Canada increased by 23 units to reach 64. 
The overall US rig count increased 9 units to reach 360 rigs  working for the week. The count is down 421 units from the 781 rigs working  this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling on land was up 9 units week-over-week  with a total of 341. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters remained  unchanged at 2. The offshore rig count is unchanged at 17. 
US oil-directed rigs increased by 8 from last week to reach 275  units. This time a year ago, 659 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting  gas were up one unit to 84, 35 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a  year ago.
Of the major oil and gas-producing states, New Mexico saw  the largest increase. With 69 rigs running, the count is 4 more than the week  prior. Pennsylvania gained 2 rigs to reach 21 drilling for the week. 
Four states saw a 1-rig increase: Oklahoma, 18; California,  7; West Virginia, 9; and Alaska, 3.
With 4 rigs running, Ohio’s rig count is one fewer thank the  previous week’s count. 
Six states remained unchanged this week, namely Texas, 161; Louisiana,  43; North Dakota, 11; Colorado, 6; Wyoming 4; and Utah, 3.
