Baker Hughes: US rig count up 5 to 266

The US drilling rig count gained 5 units to reach 266 rigs working for the week ended Oct. 2, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 589 units from the 855 rigs working this time a year ago.

The US drilling rig count gained 5 units to reach 266 rigs working for the week ended Oct. 2, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 589 units from the 855 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land was up 5 week-over-week with a total of 251 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 1 unit for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged at 14.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 6 from last week to reach 189 units. This time a year ago, 710 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas decreased by one unit to reach 74 rigs, 70 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

None of the major oil and gas-producing states saw a decrease in rigs this week.

New Mexico’s rig count increased by 3 rigs to reach 44 rigs running for the week. Louisiana and North Dakota each gained a single rig to reach 40 and 10 units drilling, respectively.

Ten states remained unchanged this week, namely Texas, 113; Pennsylvania, 19; Oklahoma, 12; West Virginia, 7; Ohio, 6; Colorado, 5; California, 4; Alaska, 2; Wyoming, 1; and Utah, 0.

Canada’s rig count increased by 4 units for the week. At 75 rigs, the count is 69 fewer than the 144 units drilling this week a year ago. At 37 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count is up 4 units for the week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada was unchanged at 38.
