Baker Hughes: US rig count remains below 1,000 units

The US drilling rig count fell 1 unit, remaining below 1,000, reaching 990 rigs working for the week ended May 3, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 42 units from the 1,032 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land remained unchanged week-over-week at a total of 966 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters also was unchanged at 4 units for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore dropped by 1 unit to 20.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 2 from last week to reach 807 units. This time a year ago, 834 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas fell 3 units to reach 183 rigs, which was 13 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas’ rig count dropped 7 units to reach 484 units working.

North Dakota, at 57 units this week, and Pennsylvania, at 42, both dropped a single unit from a week ago.

Six states remained unchanged this week. These were Louisiana, 62; Wyoming, 32; West Virginia, 21; California, 12; Utah, 7; and Arkansas, 0.

Three states—Oklahoma, 103; Colorado, 33; and Ohio, 16—gained a single rig this week.

New Mexico, at 106 this week, was up 2 units. Alaska, up 3 rigs, reached 9 units working.

Canada’s rig count decreased 2 units for the week. At 61 rigs, the count is 25 fewer than the 86 units drilling this week a year ago. With 17 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rigs dropped 2 units this week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada remained unchanged at 44.
