Baker Hughes: Canada sees another double-digit drop in rigs

Close on the heels of a 13-rig drop a week ago, Canada lost 12 rigs for the week ended Dec. 14, according to Baker Hughes data. With 174 rigs running, the count is below the 238 units drilling this week a year ago. The number of oil-directed rigs in Canada fell by 7, bringing the count to 95 rigs for the week. Gas-directed rigs were down 5 to 79 units.

With 174 rigs running, the count is below the 238 units drilling this week a year ago. The number of oil-directed rigs in Canada fell by 7, bringing the count to 95 rigs for the week. Gas-directed rigs were down 5 to 79 units.

In the US, 1,071 rigs were working for the week, down 4 from a week ago. The count is up 141 units from the 930 rigs working this time a year ago.

At 1,045 rigs working, 5 fewer units were drilling on land vs. last week. Offshore units remained unchanged at 23. Inlands waters saw a single-unit gain to 3 rigs working for the week.

US oil-directed rigs dropped 4 units from last week to 873 units working but remained up from the 747 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs remained unchanged at 198, and up from the 183 units drilling for gas a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Wyoming saw the largest gain with an additional 5 units drilling for the week to reach 35. The rig count in Texas was up 3 to 532. Ohio and Kansas each gained 1 unit to reach 15 and 2 rigs working for the week, respectively.

Five states were unchanged this week: Louisiana, 64; Colorado, 33; California, 15; West Virginia, 12; and Utah, 6.

New Mexico dropped 5 units to 105, while Oklahoma and North Dakota dropped 2 units each to reach 140 and 50, respectively. Pennsylvania and Alaska dropped a single unit each to hit a respective 46 and 6 rigs running for the week.
