Energy infrastructure company Jemena has reported that construction of Australia’s 622-km Northern Gas Pipeline (NGP) has been completed.

The line extends from Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory to Mt. Isa in Queensland and connects the Amadeus to Darwin pipeline Northern Territory grid with the Queensland (and South Australian) grids.

First gas from the $800-million (Aus.) project is expected through the line late this year.

McConnell Dowell built 422 km of the pipeline in the Northern Territory while Spiecapag Australia constructed the 141-km Queensland section.

Melbourne-headquartered Jemena, owned by State Grid Corp. of China and Singapore Power, was awarded the construction contract in 2015. Construction began in July 2017.

Also completed is the Mt. Isa compressor station, while the Phillip Creek compressor station in the Northern Territory is nearing completion.

Jemena is now progressing plans to extend and expand the NGP in expectation of gas development in the Beetaloo basin in the Northern Territory.
