Germany’s BASF SE is pursuing a capacity expansion of the integrated ethylene oxide (EO) complex at subsidiary BASF Antwerpen NV’s Verbund manufacturing site in Antwerp, Belgium.

The project will include capacity expansions for EO as well as for several other downstream derivatives, such as surfactants, BASF said.

The expansions come as part of BASF’s plan to further strengthen its backward integration into EO to support continued growth of its customers in downstream markets, the operator said.

The company said it expects to take final investment decision on the project sometime in 2019.

Details regarding capacities of the planned expansions were not disclosed.

In Europe, BASF—the largest producer of EO derivatives in the region—operates EO plants with a combined capacity of 845,000 tonnes/year in Antwerp and Ludwigshafen in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
