Baker Hughes: US rig count drops 5 units to 1,047

The US drilling rig count reached 1,047 units working for the week ended June 29, down 5 rigs from a week ago, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 107 units from this time a year ago when the count stood at 940.

Offshore units were up 1 unit from last week with 19 rigs working. A total of 1,024 rigs were drilling on land, down 8 units from last week. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was up 2 units to 4 working.

US oil-directed rigs were down 4 units this week to 858 and up from the 756 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs lost 1 unit and now total 187. This time a year ago, 184 units were drilling for gas.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Oklahoma and New Mexico saw the largest gains each with an additional 2 units working. Oklahoma stands at 140 rigs working for the week and New Mexico at 95. California gained 1 unit to 16 rigs running.

Seven states were unchanged this week, namely Pennsylvania, 37; Colorado, 32; Wyoming, 26; Ohio, 22; West Virginia, 17; Alaska, 9; Utah, 8; and Arkansas, 1.

Texas saw the largest drop in rigs, down 3 units to 530. North Dakota’s rig count fell by 2 units to 54. Louisiana dropped 1 unit to 55.

Canada gained 12 rigs to 172 working from a week ago. This week a year ago, 189 rigs were drilling. Oil-directed rigs increased 14 units this week to 117, while those targeting gas fell 2 units to 55.
