Baker Hughes: US rig count climbs 11 units to 1,032

The US drilling rig count gained 11 units to reach 1,032 during the week ended May 4, data from Baker Hughes indicate. The report shows an overall increase of 154 units from year-ago levels.  

The US drilling rig count gained 11 units to reach 1,032 during the week ended May 4, data from Baker Hughes indicate. The report shows an overall increase of 154 units from year-ago levels.

Offshore units were up 1 this week at 19 rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. A total of 1,011 rigs were drilling on land, up 13 units from last week (OGJ Online, Apr. 27, 2018). The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was down 3 units to 2 rigs working.

Rigs targeting oil were climbed 9 units to 834, and up 131 from the 703 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-targeted rigs were up 1 units to 196. This time a year ago, 173 units were drilling for gas.

New Mexico saw the largest increase with a 6-unit jump to 93 rigs running. Texas, at 515 rigs working, was up 2 units. Oklahoma also gained 2 units to 135 rigs working. Louisiana, at 61, North Dakota, at 56, and Alaska, at 6, were each up a single rig from a week ago.

Six states remained unchanged week over week, namely Pennsylvania, 39; Wyoming, 27; Ohio, 24; West Virginia, 16; California, 15; Utah, 8; and Arkansas, 1.

Colorado was down a single rig this week to 27 rigs running.

After weeks of losses, Canada was up 1 unit to hit 86 rigs running. This time a year ago, 82 rigs were working. Oil-directed rigs increased 4 units this week to 37, while those targeting gas dropped 3 units to 49.
