Canada Kuwait Petrochemical Corp. (CKPC), a joint venture of Pembina Pipeline Corp., Calgary, and Petrochemical Industries Co. KSC of Kuwait, has let a contract to Honeywell International Inc. subsidiary Honeywell UOP LLC to license its proprietary C3 Oleflex technology for a proposed 1.2 billion-lb/year integrated propylene and polypropylene (PP) production complex in Sturgeon County, Alta., near Edmonton (OGJ Online, May 16, 2017).

CKPC will use C3 Oleflex technology to produce 550,000 tonnes/year of polymer-grade propylene based on a feedstock of 22,000 b/d Alberta-produced propane from Pembina’s Redwater fractionation complex and other regional facilities, UOP said.

Alongside technology licensing, Honeywell UOP’s scope of delivery for the project will include the process design package; equipment, both proprietary and nonproprietary; on-site operator training; technical services for startup and continuing operation; and key catalysts and adsorbents.

Front-end engineering and design of the integrated propane dehydrogenation and PP upgrading complex, now under way, is slated for completion by late 2018, after which the JV partners will take final investment decision.

If approved, CKPC plans to build the proposed PP complex nearby Pembina’s Redwater operations.

The JV partners previously estimated the project’s preliminary capital cost at $3.8-4.2 billion (gross).
