The US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and US Coast Guard responded to reports from Shell Offshore Inc. of an oil sheen in the Gulf of Mexico about 100 miles south of Port Fourchon, La.
The sheen, estimated at 2 miles by 13 miles on May 12, was observed in the vicinity of Glider field, a group of four subsea wells on Green Canyon Block 248. The total subsea release was estimated at 2,100 bbl. Both agencies had inspectors fly over the area. BSEE will lead the incident investigation.
Production from these four wells flows through a subsea manifold to Shell’s Brutus platform in 2,900 ft of water. Shell has shut-in production from all wells that flow to the Brutus platform. No injuries or evacuations were reported.
