Woodside Petroleum Ltd. has reported joint-venture approval for a $1.2 billion (Aus.) phase-in development of the North West Shelf gas project offshore Western Australia.

The work involves a two-well development of Persephone field and will be the third major gas addition to the NWS project in the last 6 years.

The big-bore deviated production wells, with downhole sand control, will be tied into a manifold at a common drill center location, via rigid diverless spools.

From the manifold, a 0.3-m diameter flexible subsea flowline will be routed back 7 km and connected to the North Rankin infrastructure.

The field is in 126 m of water in production licence WA-1-L, 135 km northwest of Karratha on the Western Australia coast.

Persephone was discovered in December 2006 with the Persephone-1 wildcat about 8 km northeast of North Rankin.

The development is expected on stream in early 2018.

The JV partners, each holding 16.67% interest, include Woodside, BHP Billiton, BP PLC, Chevron Corp., Japan Australia LNG, and Royal Dutch Shell PLC.
