HOUSTON, Mar. 30 -- A group led by Repsol YPF SA has estimated it found 100 bcf of recoverable gas at a discovery in the Atlantic off northern Morocco.
The Anchois-1 well 40 km offshore on the Tanger-Larache license went to a total depth of 2,435 m and encountered two intervals of high-quality, gas-bearing sands totaling 90 m, with 40 m of net pay, said 15% partner Dana Petroleum PLC. Other participants are Gas Natural and Morocco's state-owned ONHYM.
Anchois, the first of several prospects identified on 3D seismic, is suspended as a potential future producer. In 380 m of water, it is the first well in the underexplored 3,568 sq km license.
Elsewhere in Africa, Dana Petroleum in late March spud the Tafejjartt-1 on a gas prospect in the Bouanane license near the Algerian border in northeastern Morocco. Dana Petroleum is operator with 50% interest. Drilling is expected to take about 3 months to an undisclosed depth.
The company also disclosed a small discovery at the Abydos-2x well in its 100% owned North Zeit Bay concession onshore near Egypt's Gulf of Suez. Abydos went to 1,050 m and cut 3 m of good quality sands in Miocene Kareem. A second well was plugged, and the Qamara-1 well in the onshore North Qarun concession in the western desert was dry.
