HOUSTON, Oct. 23 -- ConocoPhillips plans to invest about $400 million (£210 million) to expand capacity at its Immingham combined heat and power (CHP) plant in North Lincolnshire, UK. The CHP provides steam heat and electric power to ConocoPhillips' 221,000 b/d Humber refinery and steam heat to Total SA's 221,286 b/cd Lindsey refinery—both located adjacent the CHP plant.

The expansion will increase the CHP facility's capacity by 450 Mw to 1,180 Mw, making Immingham CHP plant one of the world's largest and most efficient power stations, while providing an additional source of low-carbon heat and power for the UK. When completed, the plant will contribute 12% toward the UK's CHP target of 10 Gw by 2010.

The expanded capacity is expected to be operational in mid-2009.

If current studies demonstrate economic feasibility, the enlarged Immingham CHP could be modified to use gasification technology to operate as a 'clean coal' facility, with carbon dioxide stored or used for enhanced oil recovery.
