HOUSTON, Nov. 28 -- National Iranian Oil Co. said Wednesday it plans to expand the capacity of its 400,000 b/d Abadan refinery to 555,000 b/d by 2006.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' news agency said NIOC will decrease heavy oil production, boost gasoline output, lower production costs, improve the quality of fuels, and take advantage of modern technology.

Feasibility studies for the first phase, to cost $37 million, have been completed.

An unnamed engineering company is designing the second, $400 million phase of the expansion.

Work is due to begin on the second phase within 34 months, after contracts are signed with engineering and construction companies.
