KNPC hires Fluor to design new Kuwaiti refinery

Kuwait National Petroleum Co. contracted Fluor Corp. to provide front-end engineering and design services to its proposed refinery in Shuaiba about 31 miles south of Kuwait City. The contract amount was not disclosed.

HOUSTON, Jan. 03 -- Kuwait National Petroleum Co. contracted Fluor Corp. to provide front-end engineering and design services to its proposed refinery in Shuaiba about 31 miles south of Kuwait City. The contract amount was not disclosed.

After completion, the multibillion-dollar refinery with an initial throughput capacity of 450,000 b/d will provide low-sulfur fuel, which will be used as feedstock for Kuwait's existing and new electric power plants.

Work began on the project early last month, and completion is expected in early 2009.
