Texaco Ltd. has placed a 20,000 b/d hydrotreater on stream at its 180,000 b/d Pembroke, Wales, refinery

The 30 million ($52.2 million) unit to process heavy sulfur diesel oil into 0.15 wt % low sulfur diesel is part of the company's program required to meet demand for higher quality fuels in Europe.

Texaco said the hydrotreater is the first project it has built using modular techniques.

All the units were assembled and fabricated by South Humberside Engineering & Fabrication Services on the East Coast of England.

Texaco estimated time saved by modular construction at about 20%, equal to about 4 months of work on the Pembroke project.

Foster Wheeler Engineering Ltd. was the main contractor for the project.
