HOUSTON, Oct. 25 -- Pacific Gas & Electric Co. has begun a gas pipeline expansion project in Northern California.

The expansion of the Redwood Path system by 200,000 decatherms/day can supply enough gas to run a 1,200-Mw power plant, said the company. The project should be complete in September 2002.

The existing system has been running at more than 95% capacity since 1998.

Line 401 brings Canadian natural gas into California, extending 425 miles from Malin, Ore., to Panoche station in San Benito County. The expansion will add a total of 14.1 miles in two separate sections in Shasta and Modoc counties in Northern California.

The court-adopted bankruptcy review process for capital expenditures has approved the $39.5 million expansion project.
