Petro-Canada to construct pipeline tunnel for Montreal refinery

Petro-Canada said Monday it will build a tunnel for pipelines linking the storage area of its Montreal refinery with its Port of Montreal facilities.

HOUSTON, Dec. 3 -- Petro-Canada said Monday it will build a tunnel for pipelines linking the storage area of its 105,000 b/d Montreal refinery with its Port of Montreal facilities.

The project will cost more than $27 million (Can.). Completion is due in late 2002.

Salvatore Giannangelo, general manager of Petro-Canada's Montreal refinery, said the tunnel under Marien Ave. would house four petroleum product pipelines.

It will link a storage area south of Sherbrooke St. with the Port of Montreal, following a public access road and passing along some industrial land. The tunnel pipelines will replace existing pipelines beneath Second and Third avenues, which will be abandoned.

Petro-Canada said it has applied for permits with city and provincial governments. It said the tunnel would have a computerized leak detection system.

BFC Foundation Lt� a Quebec firm, will build the tunnel.
