HOUSTON, Aug. 20 -- Williams Cos. Inc., Tulsa, began Monday the open season for a proposed expansion of its South Virginia line.

The binding open season process ends Sept. 7.

The expansion would begin in Pittsylvania County, Va., and extend to Hertford County, NC. Projected in-service date is May 1, 2004.

Williams plans to file its finalized expansion plans with the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission during the first quarter of 2002.

"Williams is eager to expand to meet the rapid growth in eastern Virginia and northern and eastern North Carolina, including areas that are not currently being served," said Gary Lauderdale, senior vice-president and general manager of Williams' Transco line. "The SVL project is designed to serve growth in current markets as well as support economic development in this region."
