HOUSTON, May 22 -- A rupture that occurred late Tuesday on a 30-in. natural gas pipeline owned and operated by Houston Pipe Line Co. caused a fire and electrical power outage at the Sunoco Logistics Nederland, Tex., terminal.

The terminal, which lies on about 1,000 acres along the Neches River between Beaumont and Port Arthur on the Texas Gulf Coast, has a total crude oil storage capacity of about 12.5 million bbl. The facility also houses lube oil blending and packaging facilities, lube and petrochemical storage, and marine fueling services.

"The fire was brought under control and extinguished with no injuries occurring," Philadelphia-based Sunoco Logistics reported Wednesday. Sunoco Logistics is a unit of Philadelphia-based Sunoco Inc.

Currently, the terminal is shut down; Sunoco Logistics is working to restore power and assess damages, the company said. The cause of the incident remains under investigation, it added.

Sunoco stated that it is not yet known when the terminal will be fully operational. "At this time," Sunoco Logistics said, "(we have) no reason to believe the incident will have any material adverse affect on its business."
