Fundamentals of Process Safety - PS-2

May 29, 2014

This course provides an overview of the fundamentals of process safety and identifies the essential systems and processes which require leadership and management throughout the lifecycle of high hazard facilities in the oil, gas and petrochemical sector. Delivering process safety is vital for high hazard installations and this course introduces the concepts, tools and techniques used to improve performance in process safety. The course establishes the concept that good process safety is also a requirement to achieve business results. It expands the concept with an understanding of the fundamental elements of process safety, reviewing case histories, working on exercises to discuss and practice techniques and, through an ongoing case study, it helps identify where all disciplines are involved through their day-to-day activities. Throughout the course, participants will be 'challenged' on how they view and understand process safety, and on how the apply risk based decision making. An individual action plan will be developed to provide guidance in applying the learnings of the course to the workplace.

Operators and maintenance technicians, supervisors, and managers, engineering and HSE staff who are associated with the operation, maintenance and governance of high hazard installations in the upstream and downstream oil, gas and petrochemical industry. Course will benefit anyone who wants to understand the design basis and essentials of safe operating envelopes without addressing the more detailed calculation aspects covered in Process Safety Engineering PS-4. The use of a case study is designed to identify how different disciplines and roles impact safe and reliable operations and maintenance.

You will Learn:

Participants will learn how to:

  • To identify the systems and processes required in the design basis for process safety in a high hazard installation.
  • To identify your role and that of other disciplines in the process safety systems.
  • To identify and choose appropriate techniques and tools to quantify process hazards.
  • To explain the definition of risk and how to apply appropriate risk reduction strategies.
  • To identify effective risk reduction measures to prevent, control and mitigate process safety risk.
  • To explain how to use a management of change process to minimize risk of change.
  • To describe the role of operating procedures and operating envelopes in managing risk.
  • To explain how to ensure mechanical integrity through maintenance and inspection.
  • State how to review incident investigations for lessons learned.
  • To describe how to specify audit requirements and surveillances for key risk reduction measures.
  • State how to apply the performance parameters for the safety systems in operations.
