GEORGE R. EDWARDS - 1926-2015
One of Oil & Gas Financial Journal's best friends has passed away. George Royalty "Rook" Edwards died after a lengthy illness on July 8 at the age of 89. An attorney, he served on the board of directors of a number of banks, insurance companies, and oil and gas companies. Over the years, he personally helped connect OGFJ's editors with numerous CEOs and other executives in the petroleum industry and the financial community. When OGFJ was launched in 2004, George came over to introduce himself and to pick up copies of the magazine to pass out at board meetings and to give to his friends and colleagues. He continued this practice for many years.
George was born in Waco, Texas, in 1926 and joined the US Army Air Corps in World War II, then returned to graduate from Baylor Law School in 1949. He also studied international law at the University of London, where he finished with honors. When the Korean Conflict broke out in the early 1950s, he was recalled to active duty with the Air Force where he served as a JAG officer. He retired as a Captain, USAF, and served as a commercial pilot for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marlene M. Edwards; his son David Brett Edwards; his daughter Deborah Marie Davenport; and his grandchildren Jeffrey Dean Davenport and Lana Marie Davenport.
George was a quick wit, a great story-teller, and an articulate advocate for the oil and gas business. He seldom missed a chance to promote the industry to everyone he met. We are proud to have known him.
