HOUSTON, Oct. 13
-- Central Petroleum Ltd., Perth, has spudded the Surprise-1 exploratory well in EPA-115 in Australia’s Amadeus basin.

Projected to 3,000 m, the well targets as much as a potential 50 million bbl of oil in place in Cambro-Ordovician Pacoota and Ordovician Stairway sandstones (OGJ, Oct. 4, 2010, p. 48).

Surprise-1 is 8 km south of Central’s Johnstone West-1, which failed to flow oil from Lower Stairway sandstones on recent tests. Central noted that Surprise-1 is located closer to the regional source kitchen in the Johnstone Trough and that higher formation pressure could be expected.
