LOS ANGELES, Sept. 16 -- RWE Dea Norge AS and partners reported a natural gas discovery in well 6507/07-14S in the Production License 435 area of the Norwegian Sea.
The well is 15 km northwest of Heidrun oil field and 35 km south of Skarv oil field, which is under development.
The Fred. Olsen ASA Bredford Dolphin semisubmersible drilled the well, the first on the block, to the Lower Jurassic Tilje formation, the secondary objective, at 4,477 m below sea surface TVD in 344 m of water. The well will be plugged.
The well penetrated a 150-m gas column in the primary objective, the Middle Jurassic Fangst group, RWE Dea said. “Preliminary estimates of the size of the discovery range between 5 and 18 billion cu m of recoverable gas,” it said.
On a drillstem test, the well flowed 1.2 MMscfd of gas through a 36/64-in. choke.
PL 435 interests are RWE Dea Norge AS, operator, 40%, and Edison International Norway Branch, Maersk Oil Norway AS, and Norwegian Energy Company ASA, 20% each.
The rig next will drill the 35/9-6S exploration well in the PL 420 area of the North Sea, where RWE Dea Norge is operator.
