HOUSTON, Nov. 8
– Wintershall AG is drilling the first of 16 new wells at its Emlichheim oil operation on the German-Dutch border.

Wintershall plans to drill 12 horizontal and four vertical wells in the next 5 years. It also plans 13 extended reach wells from existing pads. Total outlay for the project is more than 60 million euros.

The new wells will help the company maintain the current production rate of 140,000 tons/year until at least 2016. The field is expected to continue producing for 20 years.

Discovered in 1944, Emlichheim produces 24.5° gravity oil from a formation at 3,100 ft.
