New Cretaceous pay zones opened in southern Mississippi's Brookhaven field

Coho Energy Inc., Dallas, plans to spud three more delineation wells by yearend near a Cretaceous Washita-Fredericksburg and Paluxy deeper pool discovery in Brookhaven field, southern Mississippi. Two of the wells will be located more than 1 mile east and northeast of its Brookhaven deep discovery in Lincoln County (OGJ, July 7, 1997, p. 80).

Brookhaven field was discovered in 1943 with Lower Tuscaloosa oil pay at about 10,000 ft. One well tapped Paluxy in 1978 and produced a total of 24,329 bbl of oil. Field cumulative production is 73,301,499 bbl of oil and 337.5 bcf of gas to yearend 1996, Mississippi Office of Geology figures show.

Coho this year has added Wash Fred oil pay, re-established Paluxy oil pay, and placed on line a well producing gas and condensate from geopressured Rodessa below 15,000 ft. All zones are Cretaceous in age.

Lower Tuscaloosa averaged 20,934 bbl/month in January through June with a high of 24,758 bbl in April. First Wash Fred production was 11,678 bbl in June.

Delineation activity

Coho, which acquired the field from Chevron Corp. in 1995, is running two rigs there.

Fieldwide production in late October was about 1,300 b/d net to Coho's 90% working interest from 23 wells vs. 220 b/d at acquisition, said Anne Marie O'Gorman, senior vice-president, corporate development.

Coho's 1 Brookhaven 5-7 deeper pool discovery well in 5-7n-7e has produced more than 60,000 bbl of oil from Washita-Fredericksburg since May. Its current rate is 400 b/d.

The first delineation well, in 5-7n-7e, 1/3 mile northeast of and updip from the discovery well, flowed at a combined rate of more than 600 b/d and is being placed on production from two Paluxy sands at the 400 b/d allowable.

During an extensive test period, four Paluxy sands were tested, and all made oil. The test results suggest that three other untested Paluxy and three other untested Wash Fred sands are productive, Coho said. It plans to commingle the zones, if approved.

The 1 32N-14 delineation well, in 32-8n-7e, has tested oil from one Wash Fred and one Paluxy sand. Two more Paluxy sands will be tested before it is placed on production. A total of eight Wash Fred and Paluxy sands appears productive in the well.

The 1 5-11 delineation well, in 5-7n-7e, was drilling at 12,500 ft in Paluxy and encountering hydrocarbon shows.

Projected TD is 13,600 ft, through Paluxy.

Coho was drilling a fourth delineation well, 4 4-11, in 4-7n-7e, 1/2 mile down- dip and southeast of the discovery.

The Rodessa discovery, in 4-7n-7e, is flowing 3 MMcfd of gas with condensate from about 15,200 ft.

Coho has reactivated some of the older wells and will continue to reactivate others.

The company also operates Laurel, Soso, Summerland, and Martinville fields in the Mississippi Interior salt basin.
