EXPLORATION API March 1997 U.S. well completions
Trinidad & Tobago
Optima Petroleum Corp., Calgary, signed a study agreement with Petrotrin covering nine producing fields in the central west part of the southern onshore basin. Interest is 50-50 with Cipco, a private U.S. firm.
Gulf of Mexico
The Public Information Unit of the U.S. Minerals Management Service, New Orleans, is publishing the June 1997 edition of its indicated hydrocarbon list.
Available on paper and digitally, the list identifies unleased central and western gulf tracts that have well bores with indicated hydrocarbons. It also provides nonproprietary hydrocarbon information on recently drilled wells on active leases.
In the future, MMS said, an updated indicated hydrocarbon list will be available about three months before each gulf lease sale.
Alabama
Pruet Production Co., Jackson, Miss., and Cobra Oil & Gas Corp., Wichita Falls, Tex., completed a Jurassic Upper Smackover discovery in Escambia County.
The 1 ATIC 22-7, in 22-3n-7e, 11/2 miles southeast of West Canaan Church field discovery well, flowed 583 b/d of 50.3° oil with 1.435 MMcfd of gas on an 11/64 in. choke with 3,050 psi FTP from perforations at 14,171-191 ft. TD is 14,770 ft.
The West Canaan Church discovery well has produced 118,000 bbl of oil, 200 MMcf of gas, and 340 bbl of water since February 1996, reports Southeastern Oil Review, Jackson.
Kentucky
Kentucky Operating LLC, Owensboro, staked a wildcat in nonproducing Larue County.
The 1 Sherrard, in 19-M-44, 11 miles south of Elizabethtown, is projected to 8,000 ft or Cambro-Ordovician Knox. PI/Dwights says only 14 wildcats, the deepest to 2,587 ft, have been drilled in the county. The company has drilled Knox tests in Hart and Breckinridge counties without releasing details.
Louisiana
Unocal Corp. Spirit Energy 76 unit, Houston, is evaluating more development opportunities in North Fresh Water Bayou field in Vermilion Parish.
The F-21 well is averaging 3.5 MMcfd of gas and 700 b/d of condensate on a 15/64 in. choke with 5,000 psi FTP from 48 ft of perforations in Lower Miocene Discorbis Bolivarensis sands. TD is 14,106 ft.
Log interpretation and formation tests indicate high liquid yield reserves in other shallower Discorbis sands, Unocal said.
The current producing interval was initially tested in 1958 at 150 b/d of condensate and less than 1 MMcfd of gas. The F-21's flow rate can be attributed largely to drilling fluid and perforating technology advances, Unocal said.
The 100% owned field is producing 22 MMcfd of gas and 1,000 b/d of condensate.
Nevada
An Arkansas independent plans to drill about 60 miles northwest of Las Vegas in southern Nye County.
Depth target is confidential at the Westek Resources, Hot Springs, Ark., 1 Wheeling, in 13-16s-51e. This location spots 13 miles southeast of Amargosa Valley/Lathrop Wells and 140 miles south-southwest of Grant Canyon oil field in Railroad Valley, PI reported.
Tennessee
Young Oil Corp., Knob Lick, Ky., reports several Ordovician successes in Miller Mountain field in Overton County.
Young's 4 Thrasher, in 16-1s-51e, drilled Apr. 25 near Allons, Tenn., is believed capable of flowing 500 Mcfd of gas from Stones River at 1,030 ft and 60 b/d of oil from Murfreesboro at 1,450 ft. Ohio-Kentucky Oil Corp., Lexington, Ky., holds an interest.
The well offsets the 2 Thrasher, which has produced 65 MMcf of gas in a little more than a year from Murfreesboro. It flows 150 Mcfd.
The 1 Thrasher, drilled Apr. 10, is believed capable of producing about 1 MMcfd of gas from Stones River. Young is developing a 398 acre lease.
It plans to drill 25-30 more wells this year in the immediate area.
Texas
West
Penwell Energy Inc., Midland, Tex., staked a 22,000 ft wildcat in Reeves County.
The 1 TXL is in shallow, inactive Arno oil and gas field 17 miles northwest of Pecos, PI reported.
H.L. Brown Jr., Midland, Tex., plans to sidetrack a dry 1972 wildcat in nonproducing Hudspeth County.
It will kick off at 2,500 ft and drill northwestward toward a 3,850 ft objective at the 1 State. Old TD is 8,693 ft, PI reported.
Trail Mountain Inc., Artesia, N.M., completed a Lower Clear Fork oil discovery in Terry County.
The 1 Helen, 6 miles south of Sundown, pumped 388 b/d of oil with 20 Mcfd of casinghead gas from perforations at 7,625-7,723 ft, PI reported. It is about a mile east of Kingdom oil field.
East
Patterson Energy Inc., Snyder, Tex., completed a horizontal oil well in Cretaceous Georgetown in Robertson County.
The 1 Sandifer Unit, 4 miles north-northwest of Wheelock, produces about 1,100 b/d of oil. Patterson's horizontal 1 Smith, 41/2 miles east, has produced 113,000 bbl of oil since completion in November 1996. Patterson plans to drill a dual lateral Georgetown well in the area, PI reported.
Gulf Coast
KCS Energy Inc., Houston, will further develop Langham Creek field, where it is acquiring more interests. It will take over as operator of the Harris County field and start a 3D seismic survey soon. Current geological and geophysical evidence indicates at least six and possibly 12 development locations in existing producing horizons, mainly in Upper Wilcox sands. KCS identified an exploration prospect in a deeper Wilcox sand section that has been highly productive in nearby North Milton field. It is also considering several stimulations and new zone additions. Multiple horizons at Langham Creek field produce oil and gas from Eocene age sandstones, the Yegua formation at 6,000-7,500 ft, and the Wilcox formation at 9,000-13,000 ft.
KCS holds an average 42% working interest in 14 area wells producing a combined net 7 MMcfd of gas and 75 b/d of condensate. The acquisition from an unspecified seller will boost KCS' average working interest to 66%. The company also plans enhancements to a gathering system, disposal system, dehydration facility, and gas sales measurement equipment, possibly hiking production capacity 30-40%.
Utah
Chandler & Associates Inc., Denver, has an Eocene Green River discovery in the Uinta basin between White River and Natural Buttes fields, PI reported. The 6 Sage Grouse-Federal, in 14-8s-22e, Uintah County, averaged 1.377 MMcfd of gas from perforations at 3,810-52 ft and 3,922-32 ft.Copyright 1997 Oil & Gas Journal. All Rights Reserved.
