PLANS FOR U.S.-CANADIAN GAS PIPELINE TAKING SHAPE
Coastal Corp.'s ANR Pipeline Co., Detroit, and Interprovincial Pipe Line Inc. (IPL), Calgary, have signed a letter of intent to establish a major U.S.-Canadian gas pipeline system.
Subject to regulatory approvals in the U.S. and Canada, the proposed system will be known as lntercoastal Pipeline.
Target markets are in eastern Canada-Ontario and Quebec and the U.S. Northeast to be supplied with Canadian and U.S. gas.
InterCoastal will have a peak capacity of about 400 MMcfd.
The Canadian segment of the lntercoastal system will require conversion of IPL's 517 mile, 30 in. Sarnia-Montreal (Line 9) crude oil pipeline. Shipments of western Canadian crude to Montreal through this line ceased last month for lack of demand by refiners in eastern Canada.
Also scheduled for Canada are addition of compressors and construction of about 7 miles of 30 in. line connecting IPL's Line 9 to a new U.S. segment.
lntercoastal's proposed U.S. segment will include about 40 miles of 30 in. line in St. Clair County, Mich., which will connect ANR's underground storage site to the Canadian segment at the international border.
Intercoastal said with timely regulatory approvals its system could be in service during the 1993 heating season.
